If there was one republican presidential candidate that I respected miles above the rest, John McCain was that guy. Until recently, he’s the guy that I would have wanted to win if there was any chance he could make it past primaries. Recently though, Senator McCain had some ridiculous things to say though about plans to withdraw troops from Iraq that have been proposed by congress -
“Where in the Constitution of the United States does it say that the Congress decides how long people will spend on tours of duty and how long they will spend back in the United States? It’s blatantly unconstitutional,” He said. “The Constitution of the United States said Congress will declare wars and fund wars.”
Now I’m a few years out of school, so it’s been a while since I took a government class, but my understanding was for something to be “blatantly unconstitutional” it had to somehow violate an unalienable right as granted by the constitution. I would absolutely love to hear some of my buddies in Iraq telling McCain what they’ve told me. If our guys in Iraq thought that coming home violated their constitutional rights, I’d be all over McCain…pretty sure they’re not going to say that though.

I think you miss the point of what McCain was saying. Congress does NOT have the power to dictate troop rotation. Congress is NOT part of the civilian leadership in the military; think of them more as a steering committee.

I think you missed the point of what I was saying…whether or not Congress has the power to dictate troop rotation, to suggest policy aimed at bringing our troops home is in no way unconstitutional! Congress has one job, speak for the people of the United States. The people want our friends and family out of a country we don’t belong in, and that’s what Congress is trying to express. The tired notion of calling things unconstitutional and “un-American” is simply preposterous, and John McCain is a moron for suggesting it.

Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution:
“The Congress shall have Power… To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces.”
In effect, Congress can “make rules” for the military to follow, including troop rotation.

I’ve been there twice, and I don’t want Nancy Pelosi, or any of the democratic windbags speaking on my behalf. We should withdraw when we are done there, period.
